How long can house plants go without water?
Thu, Oct 15, 2026
Shorter than most people hope, and it depends a lot on the plant. Here's a rough guide for a normal indoor spot, watered well just before you leave.
A rough guide
- Cacti and most succulents: three or four weeks, often more in winter. They store water.
- Snake plants and ZZ plants: two to four weeks. Famously hard to kill.
- Pothos, philodendrons, monsteras: about one to two weeks before they droop.
- Ferns, calatheas, peace lilies: a few days to a week. These are the ones that crisp up first.
- Anything in a small pot or a sunny window: less than you'd think. Small pots dry out fast.
Terracotta dries faster than plastic. Summer is harder than winter. A plant that was already struggling has less in reserve.
Buying a few extra days
Move plants away from sunny windows and heaters. Group them together, which keeps the air around them a little more humid. Water thoroughly and let the pots drain before you go.
When the trip is longer than that
Then somebody has to water them. If there's no reliable neighbour, a local nursery can look after them while you're gone. With Leaf It With Us the smallest booking is $15.00 plus fees, and you see the full price before you book.
